02/26/14: Florida Police Arrest Wrong Man

A mistake by the Florida police resulted in a Florida teen spending 35 days in jail. A child made an allegation of sexual battery and said the person who committed the crime was Cody Williams. The police went and arrested Cody Williams but there was a problem – they arrested Cody Lee Williams instead of Cody Raymond Williams. Cody Lee Williams, an 18 year old high school senior, spent 35 days in jail before the mistake was corrected. The police officers involved in the mix up face disciplinary sanctions. All of this could have been avoided if the officers had followed proper protocol which involved showing the victim a photograph of the suspect to confirm that he/she is the correct person being accused of the crime.
