1/9/16: Mexican Drug Lord Captured after Breaking Out of Prison
Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was captured by Mexican authorities this week after six months at large. El Chapo escaped from a maximum security prison after his minions constructed an elaborate tunnel.
U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch spoke to the press yesterday, and said the capture was, “a blow to the international drug-trafficking syndicate he is alleged to have led, a victory for the citizens of both Mexico and the United States, and a vindication of the rule of law in our countries.” Mexican Marines allegedly received a tip that El Chapo was in his home town of Sinoloa. Marines seized 8 machine guns and a rocket propelled grenade launcher from the residence where Guzman was staying. Guzman broke out of prison in 2001 and spent more than 10 years on the run, before being recaptured.
